After aging, it’s on to the bottle. ‘Straight’ whiskey is ready for bottling just as it comes from the barrel.

More often however, combining the contents of multiple barrels blends whiskey. Neutral grain spirits (the nearly 200 proof stuff) may also be added to fine tune the alcohol content of the finished brew.

So, you see, there’s nothing to it really. Get some com, rye, and barley planted on the back forty.

Assemble some vats and buy a second-hand still at the antiques mart.

Knock out a few oak barrels in the wood shop and; stock up on some 1/5-gallon; glass bottles.

And the next thing you know - ‘Old Rappahannock’, that smooth unique taste of the mountains will be available for sipping in all the local establishments.

Be sure to save a barrel or two for yourself as well.
