Preventing Deer
Rub Damage
The fall is mating season for deer, which brings its own set of problems for trees. Bucks damage young trees to mark territory and to show their dominance. One buck can damage hundreds of trees by thrashing his antlers up and down against trunks and branches. This can shred bark, break branches and even uproot trees. Young, smooth barked trees are more attractive as rubbing sites than larger trees.
Individual trees can be protected against rubbing injury with several methods. A common technique involves placement of fencing around each tree. Research conducted at The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories has found an effective method that will not impact the appearance of the landscape. This method uses just one small plastic dispenser of predator (wolf, coyote, or bobcat) urine hung from each tree. Ask your Bartlett Arborist Representative for details because this approach is not for every property. For example, dogs will find the dispensers extremely interesting!
