Irving Smith has earned himself a spot in Rappahannock County High School’s track-and-field record books.
The senior knocked down the school’s 31-year-old long-jump record with a leap of 21 feet, 9 3/4 inches Friday at the regional meet in Charlottesville. The previous record, set in 1976, was 21 feet, 9 1/4 inches.
Panthers track-and-field coach Scott Stephens said he thought Smith was capable of setting the triple-jump record this season. But he didn’t expect him to challenge the long-jump mark.
“He’s kind of surprised us in the long jump,” Stephens said.
Prior to Friday, Smith’s best long-jump performance of the season came on May 9 at Manassas Park, where he leaped 21 feet, 1 inch.
Although Smith’s jump Friday was the best in Rappahannock history, it only earned him second place at the Group A, Region B meet.
Nevertheless, Smith will still be heading to the Group A state meet Saturday at Radford University. He is the only Panther that qualified for the statewide competition.
Smith said he is still undecided about where he will attend college in the fall, but he hopes to continue his track and basketball careers at the next level. He earned second team all-district honors on the Panthers basketball team last winter.
