Shrubs
Proper pruning is essential in maintaining the vigor, shape and form of shrubs for a desirable and long-lasting landscape effect. Shrubs should be inspected and lightly pruned on an annual basis to keep the plant contained and its growth vigorous. Too often pruning is ignored and the shrubs become overgrown and weak which reduces flowers and blooms. Timing of pruning is critical in order to encourage flowering and avoid stimulating late growth. Shrubs that flower before the end of June should be cut back or pruned immediately after flowering. Examples of shrubs with early flowering dates are azalea, sweetshrub, barberry, flowering quince, smoketree, forsythia. mountain laurel, mockorange, andromeda, rhododendron, Japanese snowball and lilacs. Removing undesirable branches such as suckers and dense growth will channel the plant's energy to the remaining branches thereby encouraging strong growth. Periodically thinning will allow greater light and air penetration, which reduces the possibility dn insect and disease infestations.
