Although a coyote looks superficially similar to a medium-sized, tawny or grayish dog, some key characteristics will usually distinguish it. Unlike a dog, a coyote’s black-tipped tail is almost always pointed down, whether the animal is standing or running. Its ears are sharp-pointed, and both the ears and snout are elongated in comparison to the size of its head.
Fortunately, in his experience Jim Bangston has found that coyotes are not posing any major threat to livestock in Rappahannock County. “They will find calves which died of natural causes, and they also are attracted to the afterbirth ” he noted.
