Last summer I began a series about the people who live and work along US. 211 in Sperryville.
Let’s resume this year with a family that has been in Rappahannock since before the Civil War...James and Phyllis Swindler. Beech Spring Farms, a series of retail buildings on the west end of the village, is a favorite spot for tourists going up and down the mountain. But did you know they have specialty lines of retail, in addition to the traditional jams and jellies, fruit, cider and baskets? You can shop all year long (except Thanksgiving and Christmas) at Swindler’s for quilts. Phyllis has developed this line for years and supports primarily American made cottage industry quilts. She also has a full line of Polish pottery, African baskets, mountain trolls, pony purses and back packs and bear and raccoon hats. Bobette Swindler, the main buyer and product display person for this family run business, has recently introduced a line of stained glass products that have sold very well.
