The Swindlers were originally from Germany and initially settled in the New Jersey area before moving to Rappahannock prior to the Civil War. Jimmy’s great-grandfather sided with the Union. To avoid being shot he had to leave Rappahannock and join the Pennsylvania Calvary. Tb this day the Swindler’s are a family of independent thinkers!
Originally living in Old Hollow, this family has been among the families on U.S. 211 for several generations. In 1938 the building which now houses the quilts was an Esso gas station and Meadowbrook Lunch stop. Chicken or ham dinners with potatoes and beans cost 50 cents, with all the food coming from the farm! Jimmy has made many improvements to land and buildings on both sides of U.S. 211. He used to put hay and let the cows come into the basement of the log cabin house across the road from the retail space.
