Holiday traffic tickets

Speeding motorists traveling in Rappahannock County were met with strict enforcement over the Memorial Day weekend from members of the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office.

RCSO Deputies made about 75 traffic stops from May 25 to May 28. Of this number, 20 stops were made on Lee Highway (U.S. 211), 17 on the Sperryville Pike, and 11 on Zachary Taylor Highway (Route 522).

Off the highway

State Trooper Brandon Johnson stopped to help Betsy Woodward, 66, from Culpeper, Va. after she drove her 1989 Buick off of the right side of Highway 211. The accident occurred on May 20 at about 8:35 a.m. Woodward suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Motorcycle D.UJ.

Tracy Sargent, 48, from Manassas, Va. was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol after tipping over her 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle. The accident occurred on May 20 at about 3:30 p.m. According to the police report, Sargent ran off the right side of the road as she was coming around a curve on Route 729. She was arrested by State Trooper Brandon Johnson.

Lesser of two evils

David Smoot, 43, of Washington, Va. struck a 1994 Buick that was packed on Highway 522 with his Ford F-350 pickup. The accident occurred on May 23 at about 2:00 p.m. According to the police report, Smoot swerved off the road to avoid an oncoming vehicle that was crossing the center line. No charges were filed by State Trooper Brandon Johnson who investigated the scene of the accident.
