Muslim students
This year marked the first year that a large group of students from Muslim countries came to Rappahannock County. The Muslim foreign exchange students agreed that it was challenging when they first arrived in Rappahannock County. “It was kind of hard in the beginning,” said Berrazzouk, “A lot of people' didn’t really know much about our religion, and others thought that we were terrorists or something. The Muslim students agreed that it did not take long, however, to demonstrate their good will to members of the county. “Once people got to know us I think that people started to change their minds in the school and the county” Berrazzouk added.
One of the biggest challenges was fasting during the Month of Ramadan in the midst of the cafeteria culture of the school. “It was kind of hard being different and having to explain it to everybody” said Berrazzouk who added that during Ramadan a person of Muslim faith is not allowed to eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. Baig, a student who was initially sensitive to her treatment at the school, said that she was honored when her host father chose to fast with her during Ramadan.
