they were freshmen. And all three were named to the all-district first team this season.
On the bright side, four alldistrict players will return for Rappahannock next season.
Junior pitcher Crystal Heflin and sophomore third baseman Amanda Smoot were named to the first team. Sophomores Emily Carter and Morgan Stephens, who play shortstop and second base, respectively, made the second team.
Freshman right fielder Megan Lee, who started this season, will also be back.
“There are some very talented girls that will be able to step up and help the team,” coach Burke said.
He said he expects Heflin and Smoot to be the strongest pitching duo in the Bull Run next season.
Burke also said he plans to scale back his coaching role next year. After three years as the team’s head coach, he said he plans to “co-coach” with assistant Earl Mills.
The change will allow Burke to be more involved in administrative duties and securing improvements for the program, he said.
