McCarthy said it would be very difficult to cut enough from the non-school part of the county's budget to make up for that 1-cent hike.
Many county expenditures are the result of state and federal requirements, and are tied to funding hum those sources. Therefore, cutting county funds would in some cases result in the loss of some state and federal funds as well.
“Because so much of the money the county spends is tied to things we have to do ... it’s kind of hard to find a penny in spending out of those things,” he said.
The public will be able to comment on the non-school portion of the county budget at the supervisors’ 7 p.m. meeting on Monday at the County Courthouse.
McCarthy has suggested that the board decide on the county’s final budget figure at a special meeting at 6 p.m. on June 25.
