Since 1853, equestrians, horse breeders and spectators have gathered under the Grafton oaks in Upperville to admire some of the nation’s most talented horses and riders. The Upperville Colt & Horse Show was the first true horse show in the country when it was held to raise funds for the local volunteer fire department which still benefits, along with other area charities.
This year’s show runs ■ June 4-10, with the featured $100,000 Budweiser jumper classic closing the action Sunday afternoon.
Upperville is also one of the oldest sporting events in the nation. What began as a pursuit to encourage better breeding and treatment of horses, has grown into a weeklong tradition with classes for professionals, amateurs, kids, adults and a family class as well. More than 1,000 horse and rider combinations will compete throughout the week.
