Imagine the amazement of a foreign exchange student when their first experience of America is Rappahannock County.
“You think that you are going to California or some place that you see on TV.,” said Nuria Rubio Lafita, a student from Madrid who studied at Wakefield Country Day School this year, “but instead you find yourself in a place with cows and horses and chickens.” Abdullah Alawadhi, a student who went to Rappahannock High School agreed. “After we kept driving and driving and driving from the airport, I was starting to wonder where they were taking me,” he laughed.
As they settled down into various schools throughout the county the students were immediately challenged by- the changes of rural life in America. “It was challenging in the first couple months,” said Saumaya Berrazzouk from Morocco. “I wouldn’t even go outside the house, because I was afraid of wild animals,” she added.
