In 1987 he graduated from the Navy test pilot school at the head of his class. He flew 436 hours, testing new planes and weapons, and was awarded the Test Pilot of the Year Award in 1989.
Donegan later served in Europe, spending two years in Italy and was deployed to Sarajevo with the United Nations as a principal adviser for air strikes.
He then captained the USS Coronado and moved on to captain the USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft carrier that held 75 planes and 5,300 people.
Serving as head of the carrier is one of the highlights of his career.
“It’s very excitirig to see all those young kids with that kind of work ethic and devotion to their country,” he said.
