Recycling efforts in Rappahannock lag behind those of many other Virginia counties, according to a recent report by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality
The report found that in 2006, 18.1 percent of trash in Rappahannock County was recycled, compared with 33.4 percent in the Northern Virginia area and 46.3 percent in the Richmond area.
In Fauquier County, 25.3 percent of trash was recycled, according to the report. In Culpeper County, the recycling rate was nearly twice that of Rappahannock, with 33.6 percent of trash recycled.
But compared with other rural, sparsely populated counties, Rappahannock fared no worse than many.
In Madison County 10.5 percent of trash was recycled, and in Orange County, 16.6 percent of trash was recycled, according to the report.
Rural areas typically had lower recycling rates than those with higher population densities. More populated areas had an average recycling rate of 40.8 percent.
