If the telescope is a reflector type, it may need to be collimated for best results. This is the process of aligning, the optical elements. The instructions with the telescope should address this. And if one lucks out, the scope may be aliened sufficiently right out of the box. If the telescope is mounted on a tripod, check for rigidity. If the mount wiggles too much, it is impossible to keep it on the target. It may help to hang a weight in the center below the tripod.
