No. 3: Sheriff’s race
For the first time in more than 30 years, Rappahannock County had a sheriffs race without an incumbent. And for the first time in the history of the county, voters elected a woman to be Rappahannock’s top law-enforcement officer.
On Nov. 6, Lt. Connie Compton Smith, the sheriffs office’s lead investigator, beat her co-worker Maj. Chris Williams and Culpeper Town Police Sgt. J.C. Welch in the three-way race.
After two terms, former Sheriff Larry Sherertz retired on Jan. 1, thus beginning Sheriff Smith’s transition.
