No. 8: No rain
Rappahannock County and other parts of Virginia suffered from a severe drought this summer and fall. The county eventually received federal drought disaster status, making Rappahannock farmers eligible for low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
No. 9: Staph scare
The four letters MRSA, short for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, found their way into the pages of the Rappahannock News for several weeks in October.
A few reports of staph infection among some students on the varsity football team closed Rappahannock County’s public schools on Oct. 10 so the buildings could be disinfected. The outbreak coincided with similar staph scares at other schools across the nation.
