No. 1: Emily Hilscher
National news hit home on April 16 when Emily Jane Hilscher, a 2006 graduate of Rappahannock County High School, became the first of 32 victims in the shootings at Virginia Tech.
More than 1,000 people attended her memorial service, which was held at the high school’s football field on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. Emotions ran high as the community paid their respects to the young girl who loved people and horses and aspired to be a veterinarian.
During the ceremony, Emily’s father, Eric Hilscher, said, “We moved here 15 years ago to give our daughters a sense of place where you would know them and they would know you. We made the right decision in coming to Rappahannock. Thanks for reminding me that we are part of this community, too.”
In August, local FedEx Driver Gary Ford was named the company’s Humanitarian of the Year for helping the Hilschers on the day of the tragedy. Ford drove the family to Blacksburg and stayed with them for several days, making funeral arrangements and keeping the media at bay.
In December, Eric and Beth Hilscher established a scholarship in honor of their youngest daughter. The Emily Jane Hilscher Passion Award is designed to recognize Rappahannock students who have a special enthusiasm for life.
