As a state, California has perhaps done the best job with sheep and ladino. They now market a “Ladino Lamb” made chiefly on ladino pastures. My opinion is we don’t need to go that far, but on many a sheep farm in Virginia I feel sure greater profits would result. In a few years we shall have experimental evidence to guide us when the Middlefburg Experiment Station gets well under way, 'until then we can go by what successful sheepmen have done.
Several qusetions farmers ask I certainly don’t know the answer to as, “Can you keep enough sheep that close together to fully utilize high producing ladino pastures?” “What are the effects of winter time grazing with sheep?” And “If I put 1,000 pounds of fertilizer and two tons of lime, which is about what might bo recommended for seeding ladino, on an acre of permanent pasture I now have why wouldn’t it produce just the same as you say ladino would?” Every week I get another question I can’t answer about it but it sure is fun to hear a man brag who’s got some.
