Bloat Can Be Reduced
By Good Management
Many farmers are slow to seed Ladino clover because they are afraid of bloat. Bloat can 'be prevented almost entirely by proper management, namely by seeding a companion grass with Ladino clover. Orchard grass seems to be the best combination found by the Virginia Experiment Station. Some other companion glasses being used in this county, are Kentucky Fescue 31 and Italian Rye Grass.
Another method of preventing bloat is to feed all the dry hay they will eat before turning them on Ladino pasture. This will help through the entire summer but is very essential in early spring and during wet days. If farmers will use a companion grass with Ladino. and feed dry hay, practically all of their bloat troubles will be over.
