In various controlled grazing tests it has been found that an abundance of good pasture supplied up to I/;! of the total intake of nutrients by the cow during one complete lactation and that this 1/3 of the total intake coming from the pasture, actually cost less' than 1 /t! of the total feed cost. These tests substantiate the thoughts of many farmers who have maintained that their cheapest feeds are their past res.
A mixture of Orchard Grass and I.adino clover is an excellent combination of grasses for the dairyman to choose. Varying amounts of seeds from these two have been tried on well prepared and properly fertilized land. In general 2 pounds of Ladino clover seed and from 6 to 10 pounds of Orchard grass is a good mixture.
The first year there will probably be a predominance of clover, but by the second and third year the two will furnish about equal amounts of grazing. After the fourth year the Orchard grass may be predominant due to its stooling characteristics. Equal stands of Ladino and pro hard grass is desirable.
Dairymen are securing best results by dividing Orchard grass and Ladino pastures into three or four smaller pastures in order to rotate the glazing. Even so, due to the luxuriant growth of these grasses on fertilized soils, it may be necessary to clip the pasture once or twice during the summer. These cuttings may be put in the silo or made into nay.
