His first job with a name band was in Chicago, the name being Joe Kayser. Gene’s skin beating with Joe got him a sweet contract with the Damsen office in Chicago, which booked him as a free lance drummer with dozens of bands doing the circuit.
He joined Red Nichols in 1929, the year of the crash, cymbol jiving and jamming with Benny Goodman. After three years with Red, Gene joined Irving Ad>onson and his Commanders, leaving after a few thousand choruses to join Mai Hallett.
Krupa, before teaming again with Goodman for the “l,et’.s Dance” three hour shows on NBC played for the late Russ Colombo and Buddy Rogers, but really got hot as one of the famous trio Goodman, Teddy Wilson and Krupa when the three of them, to kill time while waiting for the rest of the band at a recording studio, and tempted the recording man to platter the matter.
