Lower Cost Milk Will Be

Made From Good Pasture

High producing dairy cows and plenty of good pastures provide the ideal combination for the dairyman that must lower milk costs. Good pastures fed to poolproducers will not produce low cost milk, neither will poor pastures fed to good cows. The combination of good cows and good pastures- will provide the foundation for low cost milk production.

A large dairy cow will eat from. 100 to 150 pounds of grass^daily* if it is available in sufficient quantities so she can graze it quickly. If she must walk over a large area for several hours to get a fill, she will not produce too efficiently, because so much of the food energy is consumed in locomotion, that should go into production. In the end the cowwill lose body weight and therefore will not maintain a long level of production. This is especially true of high pTTxlucing cows in their peak periods of production. The ideal pasture is one in which the cow will be able to glaze her fill in from one to two hours twice daily and which' will furnish an abundance of quality food nutrients.
