Limestone, phosphate, and potash are applied to all hayland and pasture during their dormant periods, in sufficient quantities to stimulate growth for a maximum grazing period and a high yield of quality hay. Organic matter content, fertility and general soil conditions are being improved each year. This fact is borne out by the crop response since the grass program was instituted.
Emmett Doyle, having a strong will to make a success at farming but realizing his lack of knowledge of the subject in the beginning, has taken advantage of all the agencies and facilities available to farmers in the county. Being a veteran of World War II, he is a member of one of the Veterans’ Farm Training classes and is very ably assisted by the veterans’ instructor. He is following very closely a farm plan that was developed in co-operation with the local Soil Conservation District arid likewise works closely with the soil conservationist. Whatever financial aid that may be available through the Production and Marketing Administration for establishing the various soil conservation practices is taken full advantage of by Doyle.
The technical information available plus a lot of thought and hard work all rolled into one and properly applied to the land, and there looms as a result, what we consider the best argument that there are many new frontiers to be conquered agriculturally on the farms of Northern Virginia.
