LINCOLN
On a cold snowy day in Kentucky, on the 12th of February, Mrs. Tom Lincoln gave birth to Abraham Lincoln, she didn’t know then the future that was before her son, or live to see it. About nine years later his mother died, a year afterwards Mr. Lincoln married again. His stepmother lo^d him and tried to raise him in the right way. He was hungry for book-learning and his stepmother tried to send him to school. In the evenings he would sit by the fires and read. He took up storekeeping until a man sold him a barrel of junk, in which he found some law books. He had a bright mind and wanted to learn. He began to practice law and was very successful.
In 1834 he was elected to the Illinois Legislature, then he was in 1836, 1838 and 1840. In 1860 he was elected President and with his statesmanship he saved the Union from splitting. He tried hard to stop war, but finding he could not, he went to
