By means of a field chopper, I filled my silo from the first cutting of alfalfa and if necessary a clipping from one of my Ladino clover pastures. The remaining three cuttings of alfalfa are baled and used to balance the grass ensilage for winter feeding " said Doyle. “Oh! yes. I forgot to tell you, 1 sold 20 tons of alfalfa hay last year that I did nor need. And incidentally, the feeder calves sold oflf the Doyle farm nave graded good and choice for the past two years.
The 11.5 acres of past re is di\ided into five fields to provide a plan of rotational grazing. During the grazing season, pastures on the Doyle farm are clipped after removing the cattle from each field. The entire cow herd is turned into one of the five pastures and after grazing the field sufficiently close they are moved to the next field and so on until all fields have been grazed. The same procedure is again repealed,! thus, always having a fresh field of lush pasture to ■graze. “Mowing is nec-essary,” says Doyle, “to keep down undesirable vegetation and to keep plants young "and tender and more palatable for the cattle.”
In 1948fthe cattle were turned out on pasture April 1 and grazed until December 20, this „ being the date of the first snow. In 1949, grazing again started on April 1, and continued without feeding, until January 7, 1950. All of the animals were at that time in excellent flesh and in a healthy condition. “Rotational grazing is of prime importance if one is to get the maximum grazing from a field,” says Doyle.
