2. Alta fescue was developed as a single plant selection by the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station in 1923. Even though these two fescue were developed 3,090 miles apart by entirely different methods—one by natural selection, the other by controlled plant breeding—no visual differences have been observed when* these grasses have been grown in Virginia. Observation in some of the Southern States indicate that Alta fescue is more susceptible to certain rusts and leafspots than Kentucky 31.

Adaptation: Tall fescue has a wide soil and climatic adaptation. It is best suited for heavy, wellfertilized soils with plenty of moisture, but will grow satisfactorily on soils ranging from rocky, droughty hillsides to poorly-drained, rather acid soils, providingadequate fertilizer is applied. Tall fescue will grow well in all sections of Virginia.

Uses: Tall fescue is primarily a pasture grass. The hay is coarse and of poor quality. Additional data on the value of tall fescue in comparison to such grasses as orchard grass and bluegrass are badly needed. The fescues in general are considered rather iunpalatable, and limited data indicate that tall fescue falls in this category. Reports on palatability have not been uniforn} Apparently, the legume grown with the fescue, fertilzer used, grazing management, and livestock used all affect palatability of tall fescue. Heavy nitrogen fertilizer is required in the absence of a suitable legume as a companion crop.

Tall fescue is easily and quickly established, produces a heavy sod and is very satisfactory for hillsides and waterways where erosion is a problem—provided adequate fertilizer is applied.

Seedbed preparation: A clean, well-prepared, compact seedbed is best, if a good stand is to be obtained. Plowing is often necessary for best results. The usp of a roller or eultipacker after seeding is recommended. If a .eultipacker is not available, a spike tooth harrow may bo used to (over the seed, or the seed can be dropped in front of a drill.
