Perhaps even more important than feeding market hogs on pasture is the use of them for the breeding herd. Diy sows will put on weight on Ladino clover alone. It stimulates the milk flow in nursing sows, thereby producing heavier and thriftier pigs at weaning time. Nursing sows have been observed on a Ladino pasture with free access to grain in a self feeder. They seemed to prefer the pasture and seldom came to the feeder.
The value of Ladino from the standpoint of hog health should not be overlooked. It contains most of the vitamins likely to be lacking in hog rations. It also supplies minerals, adds bulk to the rations of brood sows, provides exercise, and gets hogs out of old filthy hog lots.
The carrying capacity of Ladino is excellent. It appears that an acre of it will carry three sows and their litters from early spring to late fall, except during prolonged dry spells. So far as hogs are concerned, Ladino does well seeded by itself. However, if cattle may be grazed on it at times, it is suggested orchard grass be seeded with it.
