In a dedication of this cemetery Lincoln made the famous Gettysburg address, in which were these words that have become famous: “. . . the government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
Lincoln was re-elected President and began his second term of office on March 4, 1865. The war ended on April 28, 1865. On the evening of April 14 he attended Ford’s Theatre in Washington. where he was assassinated Jiy John Wilkes Booth,,, an actor, who was. caught tw|rlv* days after and shot in a bain where he tried to conceal himself. Lincoln died at 7 a.m. April 15. 1865.
He was a man sent in a critical moment of our history to put things to right, and we are all praying that another like him may be sent now.
