Parents concerned about the below grade level reading performances of their children turned out in force at the May meeting of the Rappahannock School Board to request a summer school program.
Superintendent William Bloomer promised that the administration would “tackle” the problem of poor reading scores and present a recommendation to the Board.
But he stopped short of assurances that summer school would be held this year. »
The situation was brought to head at the May 9 meeting by a request from elementary teacher Lynn Baines to use the school for a summer tutoring program. Mrs. Baines told the Board that she’d been approached by parents who wanted her to give their children extra help over the summer to bring the students up to grade level in reading.
