In making his bid for the funds, Robinson told the subcommittee that the new school to be established at Blacksburg, Va., was envisioned as a regional training center for veterinarians, and that negotiations were in progress with West Virginia and Maryland, neither of which has its own veterinary school, to help educate veterinarians for those states.
The fruit research laboratory at Kearneysville, W. Va., is virtually completed, but funds were not in the budget, as submitted to Congress, to permit commencement of research work in the next fiscal year, hence the move to add $900,000, Robinson explained.
“Location of such a facility in Appalachia has long been needed to serve the particular research requirements of the fruit industry of Virginia and other states of the region." he commented. The subcommittee action is a first step for both appropriation items, as they must clear the full House Appropriations Committee and House floor action before going to the Senate.
