Everyone who applies for a social security number must provide evidence of age, identity, and U.S. citizenship or residency status, Bruce A. Hundley, social security manager in Culpeper, said recently.
This is so, regardless of the person’s age or place of birth. In addition, applicants age 18 or over must come into the social security office when applying. Hundley said.
The idea behind these procedures is to protect a person's social security record, to prevent anyone from misusing or abusing another person’s social security number, and to assure that the record is complete and accurate.
