The 27th annual Keep Virginia Green poster contest, sponsored by Virginia Forestry Association and the Virginia Division of Forestry, officially opens this week. The contest, which offers S3,200 in cash prizes, is open to all students in grades 1-12 who are enrolled in any public or private Virginia school. Deadline for entries is December 1,1978.
The general theme for the 1978 contest is “Keep Virginia Beautiful.” Students are encouraged to focus on ways to help keep Virginia's rural and city areas clean, on the ways trash can be recycled, or on the hazards litter presents to man and wildlife in the forestland and recreation areas.
Posters will be judged in January 1979 on the basis of originajity, artistic design, creativity, treatment of the theme, lettering, and suitability for reproduction. Winners will be announced in March 1979.
The Keep Virginia Green poster contest teaches young Virginians the importance of our forestlands, related natural resources and wise management practices. Each year the contest has a different conservation theme, and Virginia Forestry Association sends new reference and poster contest materials to over 2000 schools in Virginia. Last year over 16,000 entries were received from throughout the State.
