budget, only the travel allotment of $1,828 is below the appropriation for the current year. Mrs. Buntin acknowledged that the travel estimate was “a little low" but explained that she'd been "frightened by the increases that I was coming up with in other categories so I kept it as low as possible." She noted that she hadn't allowed anything for an additional social worker's travel and had instead based her estimate on the monthly average for travel expenditures in the current year.
"What are the requirements for a social worker trainee?" asked board chairman Dick Latham.
"A degree—not necessarily in social work—with no experience." Mrs. Buntin answered.
In response to an inquiry from board member Aline Johnson, Miss Mustoe reported that Culpeper's welfare department employed seven people in social work while the Madison County department had three or four social workers.
“If (the new position is) approved by this board, does it still have to be approved by the board of supervisors?" asked Mrs. Johnson.
“The supervisors are only concerned with the bottom line, the total appropriation." responded Latham, wiho also serves as vice-chairman on the board of supervisors.
