Need—not cost—should be the paramount concern as county agencies begin work on their budget requests for the coming year. The Rappahannock School Board in particular should pay close attention to the example set by the Welfare Board at last week’s meeting.
Chairman Dick Latham, Aline Johnson and Carter W hite bit the proverbial bullet when they voted unanimously to authorize social services director Elizabeth Buntin's request for an additional social worker’s position.
“The need is there." said Mrs. Johnson as board members approved the new position. They acted to meet that need despite the price tag that goes along with it—a price tag that will drive up administrative costs for the welfare department by 20 per cent.
It was the right decision. It is the Welfare Board’s responsibility to adequately provide social services for Rappahannock residents just as it is the supervisors’ responsibility to balance demands from county departments against the impact of higher taxes on county landowners.
