alienated parents and teachers who feel that the School Board’s primary concern should be to oversee and provide the best possible instructional program for Rappahannock’s children.
Let the School Board come up with a budget that answers educational needs in the county. Then, if the Board of Supervisors decides that the needs aren’t pressing enough to justify an added tax burden on county landowners, it can cut the proposed budget. The School Board shouldn’t feel that it has to second guess the supervisors and cut out REASONABLE requests even before the budget reaches the hot seat.
And the emphasis is on reasonable. Extra money for a summer school program is reasonable. Given the county’s revenue raising abilities and tax base, teacher salaries at the same level as paid in Arlington County and other more affluent districts are not, however desirable higher salaries might be.
As Carter White so aptly put it at last Thursday’s welfare session, the right decision—whether it’s a proposal for another social worker, hospitalization benefits for teachers or additional classroom space in overcrowded school—is not always the popular decision.
The School Board isn t in a popularity contest. Let the Board of Supervisors worry about reelection.
