Doctors sparked an interest in electric blankets in the United States late in the 19th century. The notion at the time was the more painful the treatment, the better the cure. As one early experimenter put it: “My blanket is very useful for imparting electrical heat and radiation to the human body for the purpose of inducing profuse perspiration and consequently the elimination of waste products therefrom.”
