Schools A Problem The 138 households surveyed were asked to name the main problems in Rappahannock County. Responses were divided into three categories—development, government and other. The problem area cited most often was public education. More than 13 per cent described the schools as ‘‘in bad shape.” Other government problems mentioned included “poor county officials”, “no young people in government”, “too much government”, and "poor police protection”.
Under development problems, two major areas of concern, both cited by 7.1 per cent of those surveyed, were lack of available jobs and “land zoning too strict”. More than six per cent ranked "too many outsiders” and bad roads as major problems.
Other development problems mentioned included “no recreational programs”, “water and sewage in Sperryville”, “land priced too high” and "people have to work outside of the county”.
In the category of other problems, 2.3 per cent cited “get people off welfare”, while 1.6 per cent listed “should follow the Lord” and “people reject change”. ' Asked if the county should seek business in order to broaden its tax base, SI per cent replied yes, 26.6 per cent said no and 22.4 per cent did not respond.
Asked if future development should be confined to existing towns and villages, 41.7 per cent said yes, 29.4 per cent answered no and 28.9 per cent did not respond to the question.
