Mardi Gras
Lewis C. Nelson, formerly of Rappahannock, ventured to the deep south on a 2,500 mile tour and the Mardi Gras. He visited the Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta, Ga., the tallest hotel in the world; Montgomery and Mobile, Ala., Biloxi and Merriden, Miss.; Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, Tenn., the deepest caverns in the U.S.—1140 feet; Asheville, N. C., the Biltmore House and gardens.
At the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, La. the festivities included a cruise on the President oh the Mississippi River and lunch with Rep. Lindy Boggs at the Court of Two Sisters on Bourbon Street.
In Maryon Allen’s Washington column in the Washington Post, she reported on a Washington society party, a costume ball, and 1 quote, “Lewis Nelson, in the garb of a French bishop, danced every dance from the boogie to the waltz. He swept off his black hat from his white hair and said, ‘yes indeed you may have my name. I am a Washington Regular, you might say a bachelor about town. I adore parties, especially costume parties. And when will this come out in the Post?’ ”
Nelson is retired from the federal government. He is the nephew of Mrs. Ethel Cooksey in Amissville.
