The designs on the eggs are made with a special tool called a kistka which is heated over a candle and filled with beeswax shavings. The egg is then dipped in successive baths of dye, from the lightest to the darkest colors, ending with black. Between each bath, new designs are drawn on the egg. Finally, the egg is heated over the candle and the wax is removed revealing the brilliantly decorated egg. An egg can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours depending on the complexity of the design.
