Schools
A major storm that dumped over a foot of snow on the Tidewater area skirted Rappahannock Saturday night and Sunday morning, leaving enough snow to close schools Monday.
Doug Bywaters, assistant resident engineer for the highway department, estimated accumulation at 12 inches in the mountains but only four to six inches in lower portions of the county.
Strong winds Sunday night whipped the snow into drifts three to four feet high. Most blocked driveways, however, rather than roads. According to Bywaters, Route 645 in Amissville and Route 60 in Sperryville were impassable early Monday due to drifts but both were opened by noon. Amissville had 8 to 10 inches of snow.
As of Monday afternoon, Bywaters reported, all of the county’s paved roads had been cleared of snow.
The highway department encountered problems as the thermometer dropped well below freezing when the storm began Saturday evening. “It was so cold the chemicals didn’t do any good. We had to wait until we had enought to push (with the snow plows),’’ Bywaters said, adding that crews had branched out from the main roads onto secondary roads with plows on Sunday.
