Since February 1, 1980, the Rappahannock Mental Health Clinic has been conducting pre-screening evaluations on individuals seeking voluntary or involuntary admission to state psychiatric facilities.

Pre-screening evaluation should greatly reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to state facilities, such as Western State Hospital, which serves the Rappahannock area.

According to Dr. Susan L. Vignola, Director of Consultation and Education for the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Mental Health Center, in the past individuals were admitted to Western State Hospital who, upon evaluation by the hospital staff, were found to be in need of less restrictive care than inpatient hospitalization.
