Tribute T* Old Timer
“I like to give some kind of a tribute whenever an old timer of Brooke Johns’ calibre turns up," said Pierson. Working a few hours at a time every day, it took Pierson a week to finish his beautifully written tribute to Johns. A professional calligrapher, Pierson’s penmanship bears about as much resemblance to ordinary handwriting as a chimpanzee’s crayon scrawl does to paintings by Leonardo Da Vinci.
In addition to the resolution praising Brooke Johns’ vaudeville talents, Pierson has given other special thanks in calligraphy. One, a tribute to the Carter family—A. P., Sarah and Maybelle—hangs in the Carter Museum in Maces Springs, Virginia.
"It hangs right square in the middle of the place,’’ said Pierson, recalling how Maybelle’s daughter June, now the wife of Johnny Cash, had tears running down her face when she first saw the hand lettered tribute.
