Once she finds the tree, it has to be cut and hauled back to her work area. “Then 1 have to split it in half, then into fourths, then into eights and finally into sixteenths. Next. 1 take out the heartwood and stick a knife in between the grains—the winter ring—and wiggle it around until the wood splits and I can peel it off.”
The knife wiggling process is repeated and repeated and repeated. “I’ll get tons and tons of weavers from one tree.” Jeanne said.
White oak brings higher prices than reeds and Jeanne’s work is already expensive, running from about $50 for a small basket to $150 for a large one. But considering the hours and skill involved, the cost isn’t really that high. “I get more per hour from my pots,” said Jeanne, adding that she will continue to depend on her kiln output for most of her income. “My baskets are expensive.” she acknowledged. “If someone wants to buy them. Fine.” If not, she’ll keep them herself.
Despite the price, she hasn’t had problems with finding takers. Jeanne's been exhibiting a few of her baskets at craft fairs along with her pottery and has sold all her stock at every outing. Most of the buyers, she said, have been other craftspeople or businesses that specialize in handicrafts.

Jeanne Drevas is jack of all crafts and master of many. An artist at both pottery and basket weaving, she does much more. She’s an accomplished carpenter, having finished most of the woodwork in the house that she built with help from her friends.
