Spring 1979 was unusually wet. Nonetheless, there were a few brush and woods fires in this area, some of which presented some close calls to houses and property. Even with rain on a fairly regular basis, the fire hazard in the spring seems always to persist. A The majority of wildfires in 1979 were, as usual, caused by debris burning. This hazard is expected to be unusually high in 1980, due to the amount of cleaning up necessitated by the snowstorm damage last October. Virginia has several laws which apply to brush burning and other open-air fires.
