The U. S. Department of Energy has announced the opening of the 1980 Appropriate Energy Technology Small Grants Program.
The purpose of this program is to solicit ideas from citizens about energy conservation and the use of alternative energy resources. During the 1979 program, 83 grants with a total amount of $980,000 were made to applicants in Region III. The average grant awarded in last year’s program was approximately $12,000.
Persons in Region III, which includes Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D. C., are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $50,000.
The 1980 Appropriate Energy Technology Small Grants Program will award approximately $1.1 million to individuals, local non-profit organizations and institutions, state and local agencies, Indian tribes, and small businesses in Region III. There are three categories of proposals eligible under the Program:
— Idea Development: Grants of up to $10,000 will be made for the development of ideas ranging from new sources of energy to the use of old procedures or systems for a new application. Grants in this category are made for the definition of a concept and do not involve fabrication, development or demonstration activities.
— Product-System Development: Grants of up to $50,000 will be made for the development of a concept into the design, assembly, and laboratory-scale test of a system or technique in order to determine its technological feasibility and potential practical use.
