Brooke Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Newbill Miller of Washington, tied with a fellow member of the Virginia Tech Livestock Judging Team for first place in "cattle judging reasons” at the 1980 National Collegiate Livestock Contest held recently in Louisville, Ky.
The five-member Tech contingent was named National Beef Judging Champion and National Reserve Champion Livestock Judging Team in competition at the North American International Exposition. Of 39 teams, Virginia Tech was second overall to Michigan State University, trailing the winner by only eight points.
In addition to Miller, other members of the livestock team are Tim Hussman of Brinklow, Md., William Flowers Jr. of Blacksburg, David Clark of Urbanna, Dennis Pearson of Warrenton and coach Gary Minish, professor of animal science.
In reaching the nationals where they placed higher than a Tech team has ever finished before, the five took first place in three regional contests.
Miller, a junior majoring in biology, was also named to the Dean’s list at Tech for the fall quarter. To make the dean's list, a student must make a 3.4 average or better in the University’s 4.0 grading system.
