It looks now like the secondary school systems throughout the State will wind up with no less than $1185.00 per pupil for the coming year. The Appropriations Committee is still trying to see if it cannot be raised a little more. It Sure will help our counties in funding for schools and every dollar helps. There will be no reduction in funds for Mental Health and $27 Vi million will be added to Corrections to reimburse our counties for. the already short fund in feeding and caring for prisoners. Another interesting fact revealed by Mr. Walker, is that we have 203 juveniles in confinement and it will cost the taxpayers over $17,000 each during the next 15 months in confinement. Wouldn’t we parents love to have that kind of funding for raising our own. Major problems in corrections are created by Federal Judges and Federal Government edicts. For example, one

Poling explained that Sheriff Buntin must first determine personnel needs for operating a dispatch service for the sheriffs department, request the supervisors to endorse the positions and then forward the application on the State Compensation Board for approval. In the meantime, he said, representatives from fire and rescue departments will be investigating opportunities for federal erants with local matching funds.
