provides to suburban residents are important, but they must not overshadow the rural agriculturally oriented citizens who should be the Division’s primary constituents.
An additional bill would include agriculture as one of the factors which local governments could consider when developing comprehensive plans. Localities would still retain the option to encourage development if they chose, but areas like ours, where preservation of farmland is important, would be able to make zoning decisions aimed at that goal. I think this bill would be of benefit to the localities in my district and I will support the measure.
With these bills in the hopper this year, we must also look to our future needs in the area of farmland preservation. There will be an effort this year to authorize a study of potential preservation laws. Such a study should be complete by next year and the Legislature would then be able to take further steps to ensure that Virginia’s valuable agricultural land will be preserved for generations yet to come.
